FAQs

The following is a list of frequently asked questions (FAQs) about the domain name registration process and the new competitive registration environment. It is derived from the InterNIC FAQs on Domain Names, Registrars, and Registration, and Tucows FAQs for end users.

What is a domain name?

A domain name is essentially a signpost on the Internet. Every website you've ever been to, and every email you've ever composed, has used a domain name in its address. People register domain names in order to 'stake a claim' to a particular name -- whether for business or personal reasons. Once a domain name is registered to a person or company, it is that person's to use exclusively as long as they continue to pay the yearly renewal fee. Our domain name is wjtech.com, and we also own westjerseynetwork.com, mymaildrop.com, and several others.

What is the domain name system?

The Domain Name System (DNS) helps users to find their way around the Internet. Every computer on the Internet has a unique address - just like a telephone number - which is a rather complicated string of numbers. It is called its "IP address" (IP stands for "Internet Protocol"). IP Addresses are hard to remember. The DNS makes using the Internet easier by allowing a familiar string of letters (the "domain name") to be used instead of the arcane IP address. So instead of typing 65.98.19.147, you can type http://www.i-blog-daily.com. It is a "mnemonic" device that makes addresses easier to remember.

Registry? Registrar? Reseller? Registrant? What do these words mean?

Registrar: A "Registrar" (or "Domain Name Registrar") is an organization like Tucows, Inc. that has control over the granting of domains within certain TLDs (Top Level Domains), like the generic .com/.org/.net or country-specific, e.g., .us).

Registry: The 'Registry' is the backend that registrars have shared access to. Each registrar writes new names to a central registry database, from which the authoritative root (essentially, a table of all domain names on the Internet) is built.

Reseller: A reseller is a company that uses the Tucows/OpenSRS registrar system to provide domain registration services to the general public. West Jersey Technologies is a Reseller for Tucows/OpenSRS.

Registrant: A registrant is the person or company who purchases a domain name. For example, Jessica Smith (registrant) registers the name example.com through WJTech (reseller).

What does it mean to "register" a domain name?

When you register a domain name, you are inserting an entry into a directory of all the domain names and their corresponding computers on the Internet.

How do I register a domain name?

Domain names ending with .biz, .com, .info, .name, .net, .org, or .us can be registered through West Jersey Technologies Domain Registration Service. WJTech has partnered with Tucows, Inc. to register domain names using the OpenSRS registration system.
You will be asked to provide various contact and technical information that makes up the registration. Tucows will then keep records of the contact information and submit the technical information to a central directory known as the "registry." This registry provides other computers on the Internet the information necessary to send you e-mail or to find your web site. You will also be required to enter into a registration contract with the registrar, which sets forth the terms under which your registration is accepted and will be maintained.

Will my name and contact information be publicly available?

Information about who is responsible for domain names is publicly available to allow rapid resolution of technical problems and to permit enforcement of consumer protection, trademark, and other laws. (Note: These rules may be changing soon.) The registrar will make this information available to the public on a "Whois" site. It is however possible to register a domain in the name of a third party, as long as they agree to accept responsibility -- ask your reseller (e.g., WJTech) for further details. It is not necessary to use your home address or phone number. For example, WJTech manages the domain names for many educators and education institutions. In these cases, we recommend using the school's address and phone number. Since your name appears as the registrant, you are the domain owner, no matter what address/phone number you use (as long as it is valid). You may change this information at any time.

How long does a registration last? Can it be renewed?

The registration period depends on the Top Level Domain (TLD) being registered. In general, WJTech offers initial and renewal registrations in one-year increments, with a total registration period limit of ten years.

What is ICANN?

ICANN is the non-profit corporation that is assuming responsibility from the U.S. Government for coordinating certain Internet technical functions, including the management of Internet domain name system. More information about ICANN can be found at .

Can I change registrars after registering a domain name?

Yes, you may change the registrar sponsoring your domain name (60 days after initial registration.) If for any reason your are dissatisfied with WJTech's management of your domain name, you may (after the 60 day initial period mandated by ICANN regulations) transfer management to a different registrar. Of course, if the registration of the domain name was part of a special promotion, or was discounted as part of a web hosting package, the provisions of that promotion or plan will govern the transfer. For details on the transfer process, contact the registrar/reseller you would like to assume sponsorship of the registration.

If I have customer service questions or problems related to my domain name registration, who should I contact?

You should contact the Domain Master at WJTech.com.

What are the rules for registration of .biz, .com, .info, .name, .net and .org names?

The .com, .info, .name, .net, and .org TLDs are open and unrestricted. Traditionally, however, names in .net have been used by organizations involved in Internet infrastructure activities and .org is frequently used by noncommercial organizations. .biz is reserved for use by businesses. .name is dedicated exclusively to individuals' personal names. .us is restricted to citizens of the United States of America, or those doing business in the US. The detailed rules and regulations for the various TLDs can be found by clicking here.
